REACHING
THE SUMMIT
n joe hallett NAMED TOP PGA
PROFESSIONAL IN THE COUNTRY
B
ecoming a golf instructor
was something Joe Hallett
never considered growing
up playing the game in
Florida. It was always the Big Stage
where he had his sights set.
"I never thought I had the patience
to be a teacher. I always wanted to be
a PGA Tour player," said the Director
of Instruction at Vanderbilt Legends
Club in Tennessee. "But after my third
trip to Q-School my mentor suggested
I consider becoming an instructor."
Now in his 25th year as a PGA Pro-
fessional, Hallett, who counts LPGA
Tour stars Stacy Lewis, Inbee Park and
Lizette Salas among his students, was
the recent recipient of the 2018 Horton
Smith Award presented by the PGA of
America recognizing the nation's top
golf instructor. We spoke to the 54-
year-old teaching icon to learn more
about his career in the game…
What was your initial reaction
upon hearing that you had won the
Horton Smith award? In all honesty,
it took a while to set in. But to be ac-
knowledged by your peers is ex-
tremely humbling. It is such an honor
to be recognized for something I have
loved doing for so many years.

What does it mean to you now
that you've had time to let winning
the award sink in? It lets me know
that maybe I have done a few things
right to help my fellow professionals
and it inspires me to keep doing more.
