olf can be a frustrating
game – that's hardly
breaking news to anyone
who's ever picked up a club.
Whether you're a single-digit
handicapper or new to the game, we
all have times when we feel great
standing over the ball and other times
when it seems as if we can do nothing
right. When you're at your wits end,
it's often smart to go back to square
one and start from there.
Jason Smith, a PGA Teaching
Professional at Classic Club, offers his
tips on how to achieve that.

Many amateur golfers are so
fixated on how their swings look that
they neglect the basic fundamentals.
When I'm working on my setup, I
always refer to GASP, which stands
for grip, alignment, stance and
posture. One simple adjustment in
your fundamentals can fix several
flaws in your swing.

I'm a big fan of sports psychologist
Bob Rotella. In many of his books, he
talks about picking out a detailed
target, such as a tree branch, and
seeing that target in your mind's eye
even when looking down at the ball.
This is a great way to stop thinking
about the mechanics of the golf swing
and get focused on the task at hand,
which is getting the ball to the target.

I've talked to students who believe
that the driver is the biggest problem
with their game, when in reality they
hit more fairways than greens in
regulation and fail to get up and
down for par.
Next time you're playing a round
of golf, keep track of fairways hit,
greens in regulation, up and downs
and putts. This can be a wakeup call
on what you should really be
working on at the practice area.

tAKe A BreAK
If the grind is getting to be too
much and you're ready to throw your
bag in the pond, maybe it's time to
step back and take a break for a short
period of time.
If you're overly frustrated and you
think playing more golf will help,
you could be hurting your game by
reinforcing bad habits. There's
nothing wrong with taking a little
break, because it could be a sign that
the mind needs to recharge or the
back needs to heal.
