COVER STORY SoCal GOLF INSIDER distinction of being named a mem- ber of National Geographic's Unique Lodges of the World. A Na- tional Geographic sustainable tourist expert visited the property and agreed that The Ranch be- longed on the list, due to its protec- tion of the natural heritage, support for the local community and its en- vironmentally friendly practices. The nine-hole, par-32 Ben Brown course, which winds through the lush landscape of Aliso and Woods canyons, has remained the same, offering a welcoming and enjoy- able layout and a speedy round along with the chance to reconnect with nature. "You may just bump into a couple mule deer making their rounds as well," Chock said. But, as further testament to its commitment to sustainability, The Ranch recently began a bottles-to- bunker program. "Every glass bottle on property is crushed into sand that we use to re- fill the bunkers," Chock said. "Check out bunkers on hole 5 to see if you notice anything different." While the course is the same, one major addition to The Ranch is the Sycamore Spa, a 3,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor facility that also captures the artsy yet unpre- tentious vibe of Laguna Beach. Along with a range of treatments from stress-busting Swedish mas- sage to coastal-inspired garden and sea treatments, the spa also in- cludes a fitness center, complimen- tary for resort guests 24 hours a day, with free weights, treadmills and elliptical machines. The spa also offers numerous wellness ac- tivities, ranging from yoga-in- spired movement classes to meditation and nature hikes. And, ultimately, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is all about the na- ture, from the summer camps of- fered to children that educate them about local critters and gardening, to the myriad outdoor activities lo- cated nearby, which include every- thing from world-class mountain biking, hiking and sand volleyball on land, to surfing, swimming and paddle boarding on the water. Add the history, renovation and natural splendor of the property to- gether, and Chock said, "The Ranch at Laguna Beach is a beloved, local gem and I would chalk it up to the character of the quaint seaside vil- lage. It's artistic, laid-back, welcom- ing, adventurous and beautiful." continued from previous screen THE RANCH AT LAGUNA BEACH WHERE: Laguna Beach. THE RESORT: A full-service boutique hotel offering 97 rooms on 87 acres with a spa and multiple dining opportunities. THE COURSE: Ben Brown's is a 9-hole, par-32 course measuring 2,221 yards from the blue tees. There are five par 4s and four par 3s and the course is carved into the lush walls of Aliso and Wood canyons. CLICK HERE to visit the resort's website.
