THE 19TH HOLE
View Country Club in Corona
(opened in 1963, closed in 2009);
Riverside GC (opened in 1954, closed
in 2009); Quail Ranch GC in Moreno
Valley (opened in 1965, closed in
2008); and El Rivino CC in Blooming-
ton (opened in 1956, closed in 2005).
ORANGE CO.: The last county
course to close was El Toro Golf
Course in Irvine in 2006. It opened in
1944 for the El Toro Marine base and
went public after the base closed in
1998. At that time, it was scheduled
to reopen in 2008 after residential de-
velopment and course renovation,
but it never did.
A new, 188-acre course in the same
area has been proposed as part of the
Orange County Great Park, with an
"anticipated opening in 2020/2021,"
according to the OCGP web site. (I'll
believe it only when my Titleist is air-
borne.)
Previously, Cypress GC in Los
Alamitos, a 1992 Pete and Perry Dye
remodel of Los Alamitos GC, closed in
2004, a year after Northwood Golf
Center in Irvine and Buena Park Golf
Center also had closed. The next
county course to close could be Ran-
cho San Joaquin in Irvine or
Westridge in La Habra, because build-
ing residential developments on golf
property are being discussed.
The county also could gain a
course.
According to the LA Times, a pro-
posed "18-hole short course with a
double-ended, double-decker driv-
ing range" has been proposed by
Chapman Investment Co. "to develop
a course on 200 acres of the former
Coyote Canyon landfill" in Newport
Coast.
Hey, I'd settle for a "Topgolf " fran-
chise. Don't you think Orange County
is made for a glorified driving range
offering food, drinks, climate-con-
trolled hitting bays, music and giant
HD TVs to watch sports? Bring it on.
Now the question becomes: What
will be the NEXT new golf course to
open in Southern California?
