THE 19TH HOLE so here at the Lodge we can offer things that other hotels can't," Blum said last month. "Because of my relationship with all of the people I worked with over there, I can contact the instructors directly and we can set guests up whatever their needs are, including private lessons with an instructor that is best for their level. "We're also able to sell Heavenly lift tickets here at the Lodge, so they don't have to stand in line. And we have deliv- ery service here for the rental equipment. We can fit them the night before they ski and have everything ready for them in the morning. And we have a shuttle to take them right over so they don't have to worry about parking." The golf course doesn't open until May, but if hotel guests want to ski and play golf in the spring, Blum can arrange that, too. The Carson Valley is a half-hour away, and the Genoa Lakes courses are usually open in March and April. "I've defi- nitely gone skiing and played golf at Genoa Lakes on the same day, or you can ski one day and play golf the next day," Blum said. Blum said he knows people in the golf industry who leave in the winter to go to Palm Springs or to Arizona to work. And he knows people in the ski industry who work in construction or landscaping in the summer. "But I'm one of the few lucky ones who gets to do both," said Blum, an Arizona State grad who grew up in At- lanta. "The golf and skiing are both spec- tacular. I love it here." Likewise, Veraguth said it's been a dou- ble "blessing" to have a secure, fulltime job at the Resort at Squaw Creek, working with golfers and skiers and turning the golf shop into a ski shop at the end of every October. "When you live in an area like this, with two totally different seasons . . .you go through this cycle year after year," he said. "In the end, it's all about customer service whether the guests are going to play golf or go skiing. When one season ends, you move on to the next. It works out very well." Lake Tahoe offers the best in both worlds, and sometimes they intersect. Randy Youngman has covered golf in Southern California, at the professional and amateur level, for more than 25 years.
