INSIDER Q&A
t
he world of high fashion has its share of big names:
Dior, Coco Chanel, Calvin Klein. Golf apparel also has
its big name: Ashworth. Since its humble beginnings in
1987, when John Ashworth and Gerald Montiel launched their
start-up in Los Angeles, the company, now owned by adidas,
has been a major player in the world of golf apparel.
Ashworth left the company in 1997, first designing a line of
clothing for Quicksilver called Fidra, returning to Ashworth
for a spell and, in 2011, launching Linksoul in Oceanside,
Calif., a line of golf apparel that blends the soul of the game
with the Southern California surf culture.
The revolutionary golf apparel designer, who was a pivotal
character in the transformation of uncool, polyester golf
clothes into stylish and comfortable apparel, remains on the
cutting edge of materials and designs, while still retaining a
reverence for the history of the game. We caught up with the
groundbreaking designer and asked him to fill us in on where
he's been, where he's at, and where he's headed.
