BOOK  A tee tiMe I f you promised yourself that this was the year to work on your short game and you haven't, there's still time. Sign ups are now under way for a Short Game Clinic at Chardonnay on Saturday, De- cember 13, that will focus on three basic skills: the pitch, the chip and the flop. Players will be taught the fun- damentals, basic set-up, swing thoughts, and how to be more confident around the green. "We try to teach the clinic with just one lofted club, whatever the player is most confident with around the green," said Head Golf Professional Bob Becker. "If we can promote more consis- tency with just one club we have a better chance to teach good ball position and duplicate the differ- ent shots around the green that you'll need during your round." The mechanics of the short game will be featured promi- nently, and will include tips such as this for the beginner as well as the experienced golfer: "A football quarterback throws a short or long pass with the same arm movement, he just changes speed," explains Becker. "The same thing is true for chip- ping. If you take the club 2 feet back you should release it 2 feet forward. The movement should be the same length." Becker is convinced that all golfers, especially beginners, should spend more of their prac- tice time focusing on the short game to improve their scores. "I think everyone concentrates on the driver and they don't realize how much time they're spending on that one shot," he said. "Ideally, you should start your warm-up session at the putting green, move to the chip- ping area and then hit a few drives or full shots before start- ing your round."
