S
ure, it gets a little toasty
around here during the sum-
mer. But don't let that keep
you away from the game you love.
"I believe playing golf anytime in
Las Vegas is an incredible experi-
ence," said Brian Hurlburt, a noted
Vegas golf writer and author. "But
golf in the summer provides a lot of
additional benefits."
Here are four of the best:
1
the courses are in fantastic
shape. During summer, the
fairways at Bali Hai, Royal
Links and Desert Pines are cov-
ered with the kind of turf
known for its excellent heat
and drought tolerance.
"We're all bermuda
grass in the summer," says
Royal Links General Man-
ager Chuck Bombard. "The hot-
ter it is, the more that grass thrives."
2
Great summer deals. At
Walters Golf's three courses,
prime time summer rates go
into effect on June 1. That's when
golfers can save as much as 40 per-
cent on rack rate tee times.
"The pricing and value is off the
charts for some of the best courses
in the world," Hurlburt said. "You
can play courses in prime time that
would be nearly double what you
would pay in the summer."
3
It's not as hot as you think.
"Dont' be afraid of the triple-
digit heat," Hurlburt says.
"People see 110 degrees and get
horrified by how hot they think it
is going to be. It's an often-used
cliche, but it's true: it's a dry heat.
There's really no humidity."
Of course, it's important to follow
the basic guidelines when it comes
to playing golf in summer — drink
plenty of water, apply sunscreen
liberally and cover up with a floppy
hat. Also, play between 6 and 10 in
the morning and you'll see temper-
atures between 70 and 90 degrees.
"You can play early and be off the
course by 2 or 3," Hurlburt says.
"You'll find it's not as hot as you
thought it would be."
4
It's not as crowded. During
summer, there's typically
more tee time availability so
golfers are able get around the
course quicker.
"It's not as busy as it is during
peak season," Bombard says. "With
not as many people playing, rounds
are shorter and more enjoyable."
