A year after undergoing his fourth back surgery and seeing his world ranking drop to a career-low 1,199th, Woods won last month's season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta to end a five-year victory drought. It was the 80th career PGA Tour victory for the Orange County native – his first since the Bridge- stone Invitational in August 2013 – and vaulted him to 13th in the Offi- cial World Rankings heading into the Ryder Cup in late September . . . Two Orange County natives – Hunter Mahan (Orange) and Cameron Tringale (Mission Viejo) secured their 2019 PGA Tour cards through the Web.Com Tour Finals . . . . With two events left in the PGA Tour Champions' regular season, Paul Goydos of Coto de Caza was in the top 20 on the season-long Schwab Cup points list. The top 72 players on the points list qualify for the first of three Schwab Cup playoffs events . . . The second playoff event, for the top 54 players on the Schwab Cup points list, will again be contested at Sher- wood Country Club (Oct. 26-28) in Thousand Oaks, this year renamed the Invesco QQQ Championship. Top 36 players advance to the season- ending Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix . . . Before beginning her senior year at UCLA, Lilia Vu (Foun- tain Valley) helped lead Team USA to the Espirito Santo Trophy for the first time in 20 years at the Women's World Amateur Team Champi- onships in Dublin, Ireland. The team of Vu, Alabama's Kristen Gillman and Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho recorded a four-round total of 29- under par to post a 10-stroke victory over Team Japan in the biennial event. It was the first U.S. victory in the event since 1998. . . Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point is conducting Fall Junior Golfer Clinics on Saturday afternoons through No- vember. Cost is $45 per player, with special clinics for beginning juniors (from 2-3:30 p.m.) and for intermedi- ate juniors (from 4-5:30 p.m.) Reser- vations are mandatory and space is limited.
